Essen BioScience is a privately held company located inAnn Arbor Michigan.  While they have been developing instrumentation for cell-based assays since the early 1990’s, historically, they have licensed or sold their inventions to third parties for sales and distribution.   To date, their instrument platforms and subsequent generations have accounted for nearly 1 billion dollars in worldwide sales.

IncuCyte

The most recent invention is the live-cell imaging system known as IncuCyteTM. The IncuCyteTM platform was initially developed to provide a non-invasive method of monitoring live cells in culture. Their years of experience in developing functional cell-based assays necessitated a means of standardizing and documenting cellular growth rates and morphology, in essence adding an element of science to the art of cell culture.

IncuCyteTM is the first automated imaging system designed to fit “inside” a standard cell culture incubator. This approach facilitates around-the-clock kinetic imaging without removing the cells from the controlled environment. The unique software interface allows one to set up and view images and image metrics remotely. IncuCyteTM was also the first live-cell imaging product family which was made to conveniently accept microplates, T-flasks and dishes.

They currently have three versions of the IncuCyteTM platform enabling live-cell imaging applications beyond basic cell culture. Most of these applications take advantage of the ability for IncuCyteTM to easily and conveniently gather time-lapse images, either phase or fluorescence. They also have invented a new type of phase imaging, which they call HD Phase Imaging, which greatly enhances the ability to take phase contrast images in higher format microplates.
