Dr Matt Burton, Manager, Flow Cytometry & Imaging Facility at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI), Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

ejut_zzu8aealga.jpgThe Flow Cytometry & Imaging Facility located at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute provides instrumentation and assistance for performing flow cytometry, cell sorting and confocal microscopy. Headed up by Dr. Matthew Burton, the facility provides extensive instrument training as well guidance in experimental setup and design. Says Dr. Burton, "Analysing cells can be a complex science, so we're here to help our researchers get the most from all the instrumentation we have available."

The facility supports a wide range of research with immunophenotyping and stem cell investigation being at the forefront and MCRI is at the leading edge of innovative technology relevant to cellular research and analysis. One such technology, the spectral detector approach offered by Cytek on the Aurora Flow Cytometer, was an attractive alternative to the more conventional flow cytometers that were already housed at the MCRI facility.

Dr. Burton explains "A 5 laser system was our base because we had so many researchers with established panels on our current 5 laser instruments. UV was a key requirement. We felt the spectral capabilities and the elimination of the need to match specific flurochromes to filters was a big advantage in a diverse multi-user facility. Now, as long as a probe is sufficiently excited, users can run them on the Aurora, no more turning them away if we don't have a suitable filter."

The user-friendly interface, far-red sensitivity and the spectral capabilities are the favourite features of the technology so far.

"It's certainly moved users off our other instruments! The spectral aspect has made panel design easier for researchers who seem to be continually expanding their panels and enabling research that was previously very challenging." adds Dr. Burton.

mcri_logo_colour_4.jpgAbout MCRI

Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) is the largest child health research institute in Australia and one of the top three worldwide for research quality and impact. Our team of more than 1200 talented researchers is dedicated to making discoveries to prevent and treat childhood conditions. Many of our researchers are also clinicians at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, where the Institute is based. Their research is informed by the problems facing their patients, but it also means when a discovery is made, this is quickly transformed into practical treatments for children in the hospital.
